Hanji Hanok is an indoor structure inspired by the roof of a traditional Korean house and designed with a minimal framework. Hanji, Korean paper, evokes the texture and arrangement of concave and convex roof tiles over a lightweight frame. The principles governing the tiled roof—from its main surfaces to its sloping ridges and central ridge—are translated into a modular system.Apart from the framework, the structure is made largely of hanji, highlighting the material’s inherent texture and warmth while considering recycling after disassembly. Cotton replaces waguto, the earthen material used to secure roof tiles, providing structural stability and a texture that complements the paper. The work explores how the structural principles of hanok can be adapted to contemporary interiors through new materials and methods of assembly.First presented within Kooksoondang’s ‘Baeksejudang’ space at the 2026 Seoul Living Design Fair, Hanji Hanok received the Space Award at the 2026 Seoul Living Design Awards.
