Design Dept. collaborated with Kooksoondang on the spatial design of its Baekseju booth at the 2026 Seoul Living Design Fair. The project marked the first presentation of Hanji Hanok(한지한옥), a newly developed structure designed for indoor spaces.Inspired by the roof of a traditional hanok, Hanji Hanok recreates the alternating contours of concave and convex roof tiles in hanji, supported by a minimal framework. The arrangement of traditional roof tiles—from the main roof surface to the descending ridges and central ridge—was developed into a modular system. Apart from its supporting framework, the structure is made largely of hanji, bringing the warmth of natural materials together with environmental considerations. Cotton batting replaces waguto(와구토), the earthen material traditionally used to secure and finish roof tiles, contributing to structural stability while lending visual warmth alongside the hanji. Recycling after dismantling was considered from the outset.Drawing on the structural principles of traditional hanok, Hanji Hanok explores the possibilities of new materials and spatial forms. This design experiment proposes a new direction for hanok within contemporary spatial design.
