아름지기 기획전 《치마, 겹 위에 펼쳐진》은 시대를 가로질러 이어져 온 치마의 고유한 형태와 정서를 새롭게 바라보며, 그 안에 축적된 미감과 삶의 지혜를 조명하는 전시다. 넓은 평면의 천이 몸을 만나 입체적인 실루엣으로 펼쳐지는 과정을 통해, 한국 치마의 구조적 아름다움과 몸·자연의 관계를 살핀다.온지음 옷공방은 문헌자료와 회화, 출토 유물을 바탕으로 여성 한복을 대표해 온 치마저고리를 고증하고 재현하였다. 직물 또한 현대에 유통되는 한복지 대신 삼국시대의 금(錦)과 전(氈), 고려시대의 능(綾)과 라(羅), 조선시대의 사(紗)·단(緞)·초(綃) 등 각 시대를 대표하는 옷감의 질감과 조직, 무늬를 현대 직기로 되살려 당시 복식의 미감을 구현하고자 하였다. 자료가 충분하지 않은 부분은 신중한 실험을 통해 보완하고, 복식의 패턴은 현대인의 체형을 고려해 조정하여 전통의 실루엣이 오늘의 몸 위에서도 자연스럽게 드러나도록 하였다.치마는 천을 허리에 둘러 입는 단순한 구조 안에 몸과 옷 사이의 넉넉한 공간을 품는다. 이 여백에서 형성되는 풍성한 곡선은 착용자의 움직임과 바람에 따라 유연하게 변화하며 고유한 율동감을 만든다. 이번 전시는 몸을 구속하지 않는 너그러움과 여백의 미, 절제와 화려함이 어우러지는 균형을 통해 시대를 넘어 이어져 온 한국 치마의 아름다움을 오늘의 감각으로 경험하도록 한다.

Arumjigi’s exhibition Within the Folds takes a fresh look at the distinctive forms and sensibilities of the chima, the Korean skirt, exploring the aesthetics and wisdom of living accumulated within it across generations. Through the transformation of a broad, flat length of fabric into a three-dimensional silhouette around the body, the exhibition examines the structural beauty of Korean skirts and the relationship between the body and nature.Onjium Clothing Studio researched and recreated the chima and jeogori—the skirt and jacket that have long defined women’s hanbok—drawing on written sources, paintings, and excavated garments. The studio also used modern looms to recreate the textures, weave structures, and patterns of textiles characteristic of each period, rather than using commercially available contemporary hanbok fabrics. These include geum (錦) and jeon (氈) from the Three Kingdoms period, neung (綾) and ra (羅) from Goryeo, and sa (紗), dan (緞), and cho (綃) from Joseon. Where historical evidence was limited, the studio proceeded through careful experimentation. Garment patterns were adjusted to accommodate contemporary body proportions, allowing traditional silhouettes to take shape naturally on the body today.Within its simple construction—a length of fabric wrapped around the waist—the chima holds a generous space between cloth and body. The full curves formed by this space shift with the wearer’s movements and the breeze, creating a distinctive rhythm. Through its freedom from bodily constraint, the beauty of the space it leaves, and its balance of restraint and splendour, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the enduring beauty of Korean skirts through a contemporary sensibility.
