Onjium held a book talk at Thames & Hudson’s London headquarters to celebrate the publication of The Art of Korean Cooking, released by the publisher in Europe and North America. Onjium Restaurant’s Head Chefs Eunhee Cho and Sungbae Park and Director Kathryn J. Hong were joined by contemporary artist Do Ho Suh, whose practice explores memory, space and the notion of home.Centered on the shared themes of taste and memory, the conversation unfolded along three strands. Onjium reflected on taste as a sensory experience shaped by accumulated time and memory, discussing how historical records can be experienced anew through the language of the present. The participants shared a view of clothing, food and architecture as interconnected aspects of a way of life. They also considered tradition as an ongoing process of interpretation and experience, exploring how its essence can endure in contemporary life.More than a recipe book, The Art of Korean Cooking offers insight into the cultural contexts and ways of life embodied in food. The book talk provided an opportunity to reflect on how the rich sensory dimensions and accumulated histories of Korean cuisine can be experienced and carried forward across languages.
