Arumjigi’s 2023 exhibition "blurring boundaries : handok, revisited" draws on many years of research into dress culture to reconsider hanbok itself through a contemporary lens. Moving beyond the study of traditional garment forms, it explores how hanbok’s proportions, aesthetics, and material qualities can find continuity in contemporary life, loosening the boundaries between tradition and the present. For this exhibition, Onjium Clothing Studio collaborated with US-based designer Christina Kim, drawing on its longstanding research into traditional dress. Kim’s perspective, unconstrained by convention or prescribed forms, takes hanbok’s own structure and meaning as its starting point, rather than borrowing it as a design motif. Together, they studied historical garments ranging from Joseon women’s undergarments and wonsam (ceremonial robes) to men’s baeja (vests) and deunggeori (sleeveless jackets). Respecting the essential qualities of their forms, colours, and materials, they explored new possibilities suited to contemporary living. The exhibition goes beyond simply modernising or reinterpreting historical forms to reveal a process through which hanbok’s layers of history and cultural sensibility can flow naturally into everyday life. Adapted for ease of wear and care while retaining traditional aesthetics, the resulting garments suggest how hanbok, long confined by formal conventions, can return to daily use. In doing so, the exhibition reminds us that hanbok is a living form of Korean dress that continues to evolve gradually in the present.
