Design Dept. collaborated with Kooksoondang to design the Baekseju booth at the 2025 Seoul Living Design Fair. The project translated Baekseju’s renewed brand identity and the significance of traditional Korean liquor culture into a setting where visitors could experience the brand’s story. The design centered on the madang(마당), the courtyard that has long served as a place for celebrations and gatherings in traditional Korean homes. Usually left open and brought to life on festive occasions, the courtyard became a setting for a celebration of Baekseju. Brewing residue from Baekseju production was used on the courtyard floor, offering a sensory connection to the brewing process. Traditional materials and forms conveyed traces of nature and time throughout the space.Drawing on research from Onjium’s studios, the design incorporated doors and canopy structures made with fabric woven from silk and ramie, alongside Uncheon stone(운천석), a material used in heritage restoration and hanok construction. Together, these elements brought traditional and contemporary materials into harmony. Through sight and touch, the booth conveyed the aesthetics and philosophy of traditional Korean brewing, expressing both the brand’s values and a distinctly Korean sense of space.
