Housing Studio designed 'Mujungwon(무중원)' as a contemporary setting for ancestral rites, combining a burial site and memorial for the client couple with a place for their family to rest.Drawing on the ritual buildings of Joseon(조선)’s scholar-official families and the spatial organization of royal tombs, the design reinterprets the axis and routes leading from the entrance through spaces for ancestral rites to the burial grounds. A memorial building, memorial hall, burial grounds and garden are arranged across the gently sloping site, creating a natural sequence of connected spaces. Inspired by traditional ritual buildings, pavilions and Seokguram Grotto(석굴암), the architecture translates their structures and symbolism into a contemporary architectural language. In the memorial hall, light and scale gradually change along a sequence of entrance hall, corridor and main hall, making remembrance part of the spatial experience. The memorial building draws on the pavilion form found in traditional ancestral ritual complexes, combining a wooden-floored space with a balcony. Exterior louvers regulate daylight and direct sunlight while partially screening views to create a calm setting. The project offers a way for the order and meaning of traditional ritual spaces to find renewed relevance in contemporary life.
