Housing Studio restored 'the birthplace of Cho Hong-je(조홍제)', also known by his pen name Manu(만우), in Deungchon-ri, Gunbuk-myeon, Haman County, South Gyeongsang Province(경남 함안군 군북면 등촌리). The work repaired the damaged hanok structures and recovered their original form. The project sought to stabilize a traditional home affected by subsidence and deformation, and to reveal its spatial organization and the patterns of life it once supported. The sarangchae(사랑채), the reception and living quarters, and the anchae(안채), the inner family quarters, were fully dismantled. Damaged timbers were replaced with wood selected to match the color and grain of the existing materials, and the buildings were reassembled on reinforced foundations to ensure structural stability. The remaining buildings were repaired while preserving their original form. For a detached building lost to fire, the site was cleared and preserved based on the foundation stones uncovered during excavation. The home’s spatial hierarchy centers on the sarangchae and anchae. With rooms arranged in two rows and a continuous wooden veranda, the sarangchae establishes a connection with the outdoors. The anchae reflects the routines of domestic life through its central wooden-floored hall, kitchen and attic. The surviving structures and architectural details allow visitors to understand both the ways of life of the period and the region’s distinctive characteristics.Beyond the physical restoration of a traditional home, the project reconnects the patterns of life and spatial order it embodies with the present.
