Arumjigi’s 2019 exhibition "Baji, Korean Pants, Clothes for Today After 2000 Years" traces the formation and evolution of Korean dress through baji (袴), trousers worn since antiquity by people of all ages and genders. By selecting and recreating trousers that embody the distinctive character and aesthetics of the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, and Joseon periods, the exhibition examines the fundamental structure and diversity of form in Korean dress.Onjium Clothing Studio brings the characteristics of each period to life through works that convey the dynamism and practicality of Three Kingdoms trousers, the openness and refined aesthetics of Goryeo trousers, and the coexistence of restraint and unconventional forms in Joseon trousers. Drawing on close study of historical garments and artefacts, the studio produced new textiles to faithfully recreate the original garments. Alongside these recreations, reinterpretations by contemporary fashion designers explore how traditional trousers can engage with the sensibilities of today. For contemporary audiences most familiar with hanbok trousers of the Joseon period, the exhibition offers a renewed appreciation of the long history and beauty of form of Korean trousers, opening new perspectives and broadening discourse on traditional Korean dress culture.
