Doors : Boundaries of Communication

Arumjigi’s 2014 exhibition "Doors : Boundaries of Communication" explores the meaning and role of boundaries between spaces through one of architecture’s most fundamental elements: the door. Onjium Housing Studio presents works that recreate and reinterpret for contemporary use the forms of boundaries found in traditional architecture, drawing on the Donggwoldo, a painting depicting the Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung palace complexes. These include imun, paired gateways serving ceremonial and everyday functions; panjang, wooden fences that are more adaptable than stone walls yet carry a stronger sense of boundary than contemporary partitions; and chwibyeong, screens of living plants that define spatial boundaries. Together, these works reveal the flexibility and formal order of traditional spaces. By also presenting the doors and gateways set within these fences and boundaries, the exhibition offers a contemporary experience of the thinking underlying traditional architecture—how it shapes movement through spaces and the relationships between them.
