‘한옥’이라는 말은 개항 이후 서양의 근대 건축이 유입되면서 그와 대비하기 위해 등장한 용어로, 우리 고유의 방식으로 지은 집을 가리킨다. 오늘날에는 주로 목조 구조와 한식 기와를 갖춘 전통 건축을 의미하지만, 과연 한옥은 무엇이며 어디까지를 한옥이라 부를 수 있을까. 이러한 질문에서 출발한 온지음 집공방은 오랜 세월 변화해 온 한옥의 원형을 탐구하며 오늘의 삶에 어울리는 새로운 한옥의 가능성을 모색해 왔다. 『오늘이 깃든 한옥』은 집공방이 지난 10년간 이어온 연구와 설계, 실험의 과정을 담은 첫 번째 책으로, 현대의 주거 환경 속에서 한옥이 하나의 동시대 건축 형식으로 자리할 수 있는 방향을 제시한다. 집공방의 주요 작업 가운데 13개의 프로젝트를 선별해 계절의 흐름을 담은 건축 사진과 도면, 다양한 자료를 함께 수록하여 각 프로젝트가 지닌 고민과 도전의 과정을 생생하게 보여준다.
'Hanok' — Korea's traditional wooden architecture with tiled roofs — is a term that only came into use after Western buildings arrived on Korean shores, as a way of naming what had always simply been home. What counts as a hanok, and can the form evolve without losing its essence? These are the questions Onjium's Housing Studio has been working through for the past decade. Hanok of Today is their first book: a record of ten years of research, design, and hands-on experimentation. Thirteen projects are documented through architectural photography, drawings, and supporting materials — making the case that hanok is not a relic to be preserved, but a living architectural language capable of meeting contemporary life on its own terms.
