The Design Dept.’s Sambal is a small raised table inspired by the reception scene depicted in the murals of Muyongchong(무용총), a Goguryeo(고구려) tomb. Through an exploration of historical materials and techniques, the design brings the sculptural qualities of traditional furniture into contemporary use.The tabletop is made of leather finished with ottchil lacquer, drawing on passages in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty that describe the lasting qualities of lacquer and the merits of leather armor. The finish preserves the leather’s natural color and texture while enhancing its durability and functionality, allowing its beauty to develop over time. The legs connect to the wooden support beneath the leather tabletop through joints informed by traditional hanok construction. Three elongated metal plates are bent into legs with horseshoe-shaped ends, combining graceful curves with stability.Sambal was produced in collaboration with craftspeople in Euljiro(을지로), Seoul. Working within the district’s production network, which connects highly skilled specialists across successive stages of fabrication, the project contributes to the continuity of urban manufacturing.
