Presented in the Material Practices section of Frieze Seoul 2026, Arumjigi’s booth (MP7) explores how the attitudes and values embodied in tradition can find expression in contemporary spaces and objects. Held at COEX in Seoul from 2 to 5 September, the presentation considers tradition as a living source of wisdom for everyday life amid the climate crisis, social disconnection, and rapidly consumed trends. The space unfolds in two scenes. The first is Hanji Hanok, an installation by Yesl Lee of Onjium Design Dept.. Evoking a Joseon-period sarangbang, a scholar’s room, it is constructed from natural materials with soft, warm textures, including hanji, traditional Korean paper, and cotton batting. Visitors are invited to linger and experience the aesthetics of tradition and the approach to living embodied in the space. The second scene centres on exchange and hospitality. Works by ceramic artists Lee In Chin, Kwon Dae Sup, Lee Hun Chung, and Lee Kang Hyo, alongside traditional blind maker Cho Dae Yong and other longstanding collaborators of Arumjigi, come together in one setting. Holding the traces of different makers and the time devoted to their creation, these objects enter into relationships with people, shaping a place for gathering and exchange.Through four themes—our approach to time, our way of seeing objects, the care we bring to making, and the ways we form relationships—the presentation examines where tradition meets life today. Together, Arumjigi and Onjium conceive a space that understands tradition as a cultural continuum, transformed through human hands and time and carried forward to future generations. It reveals how our choices about what we make, how we use it, and the relationships we form are inseparable from the question of what we leave to those who come after us.
