SEA BRIDGES 2026: Tea|Cha is the second exhibition in a collaborative project connecting Seoul and Japan’s Tango region through culture. Taking tea as its focus, it explores the meeting points of craft, food culture, and natural cycles. Following their first collaboration in 2025, which brought together traditional craft and the cultures of food, dress, and dwelling, Onjium and the Japanese nonprofit organisation TOMORROW present exhibitions and events with artists and chefs from Korea and Japan.Korea and Japan have developed distinctive food cultures shaped by their different natural environments and ingredients, while sharing a tradition of understanding food and medicine as having a common origin and caring for the body through materials found in nature. Fruits, spices, and medicinal ingredients carried along routes of exchange took root in each region’s climate and ways of living, giving rise to different tea and culinary traditions. Presented in Seoul and Tango, the exhibition traces these exchanges and transformations, considering how knowledge and culture carried across the sea take hold in new places and continue into the future. The central concept of the Seoul exhibition is the seed. Holding the possibility of new life, a seed travels on the wind and along waterways, growing into a different form as it encounters an unfamiliar environment. Its journey embodies both the cycles of life and the passage of time connecting past, present, and future. Drawing on this concept, Onjium worked with Korean and Japanese artists to create tea objects in glass, wood, ceramics, straw, and other plant fibres, composing a setting in which different materials and makers’ hands meet around tea.Jointly curated by TOMORROW and Onjium, the exhibition features Minwook Kim, Soojin Choi, Hwang Kyungwon, Hwang Jeonghwa, Chang Yunseo, and Onjium Clothing Studio from Korea, alongside Yuriko Asano and Sonoko Matsuda from Japan. The Seoul exhibition brings together tea-related works by artists from both countries, while Tango presents an installation by Yuriko Asano.
