Held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul, "Cartier, Crystallization of Time" is a major exhibition bringing together pieces from the Cartier Collection, which has been presented at national museums and art museums around the world, to explore the Maison’s artistic vision and craftsmanship. Through approximately 300 collection pieces, archival materials, and contemporary creations from private collections, the exhibition reveals the creative values and cultural influence Cartier has developed over time, organised around the theme of an “axis of time.” The exhibition is designed by New Material Laboratory, founded by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida, creating an environment in which the works and their spatial setting respond to one another.Onjium contributes as a consultant, bringing Korean aesthetics and the possibilities of traditional materials to the exhibition space. Resonating with Cartier’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship and creative exploration, Onjium proposed materials that convey the techniques and textures of traditional Korean craft: ra (羅), a silk gauze developed through the Clothing Studio’s research; hanji, traditional Korean paper; and lacquered hanji. With material qualities and beauty that deepen over time, these materials enrich the exhibition’s narrative and spatial experience, creating a new sensory setting in which distinct cultural traditions intersect. Through the shared values of craftsmanship and artistic inquiry, the collaboration brings Cartier’s creative heritage into dialogue with the aesthetics of traditional Korean craft.
