The National Museum of Korea’s special exhibition "Wise and Unbiased, Royal Philosophy in Paintings and Calligraphy of the Joseon Dynasty" marks the 300th anniversary of King Yeongjo’s accession to the throne. It examines how Yeongjo and Jeongjo used writing and painting to convey their political intentions and philosophies of governance. Amid conflicts surrounding royal authority, the two monarchs gave expression to their pursuit of tangpyeong—the ideal of impartial governance—through words and images. Drawing on these written and visual records, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the political culture of the late Joseon dynasty.Onjium Clothing Studio contributes to the exhibition with a newly made acheong mokgapjang, a traditional deep-blue cotton curtain. Historical paintings, including Eulsa Chinjeong Gyebyeong and Hwaseong Wonhaengdo, depict curtains in acheong, a deep blue approaching black, hanging before palace gates. Taking these historical scenes as references, the studio dyed cotton cloth in this colour and added traditional decorative elements known as nagyeong and myeonnyeong, creating a new curtain using traditional methods.Installed in the gallery, the acheong mokgapjang connects the ways of living and spatial sensibilities of the past with the present exhibition setting. Through this work, the exhibition suggests that bringing scenes from historical records to life in a contemporary space can itself become another form of communication.
